The Depot

It was a train station before it was a bar.

The building went up in the 1930s as a train station for travelling loggers. The upstairs was a bunk house. Men coming off the timber could get a bed, a hot meal, and a drink of Kentucky moonshine over the bar.

The trains are gone and the trail took their place. The traffic is on sleds and four-wheelers now, and it arrives cold and hungry in much the same condition. The Demmith family still serves it hot food and legendary drinks.

Ninety years on, the building is doing the same job for the same reason it was built.

Weary travelers could grab a drink of Kentucky moonshine and a hot meal.

There is no photograph of this building as a building anywhere on Mulligans' current site - only a side view taken in 2018. A 1930s logging depot in the snow, with sleds parked outside, is the single most valuable picture nobody has taken yet.
